Digital CHC

Digital CHC is a cloud-based software platform supporting Continuing Healthcare (CHC) assessments. As highlighted in the Phase 3 COVID-19 response all assessments should be restarted and follow the National Framework. Digital CHC is proven to reduce unwarranted variation whilst speeding up the assessment process, reducing the administration burden and supporting clinicians in remote working.

CHC assessments are carried out to determine who pays for ongoing care needs after a patient receives healthcare, often when they are ready to leave hospital. If there are ongoing medical care needs, this should be funded by the NHS.

During COVID-19, emergency period CHC assessments were ceased under the emergency hospital discharge guidance. CCGs have now been instructed to restart assessments from September.

The HSJ reports: The decision to restart continuing healthcare assessments could result in a “total mess” and years of litigation against NHS commissioners, national leaders have been warned.

Between March and the end of August, as part of the response to coronavirus, the government has provided emergency funding to bypass the CHC assessment process and fund people’s care. All those discharged over the last five months need to be assessed as well as new patients. Estimates suggest the backlog totals around 30-70,000.
